Getting Instagram Data for Free in 2026: Limits and Upgrade Paths

Free Instagram data still exists in 2026, but every free option has a ceiling. Some cover only accounts you own. Some cap you at 30 hashtags a week. Some are open only to academic researchers, and some run out after a few thousand records. The useful question is how far each free tier goes and what the first paid step costs once you outgrow it.

Introduction

Free Instagram data options fall into three groups: Meta's own APIs, Meta's research program, and the free tiers of third-party data providers. Each group has a different ceiling. Meta limits whose data you can reach, the research program limits who can apply, and commercial providers limit how much you can pull.

Access got narrower in 2024, when two widely used free routes closed:

  • Instagram Basic Display API retired. Meta's announcement: "Starting on December 4th, 2024, Instagram Basic Display API will no longer be available." Developers were pointed to the Instagram API with Facebook Login or with Instagram Login (Meta for Developers).
  • CrowdTangle shut down on August 14, 2024 (Fortune). Many journalists, NGOs and researchers had used it for free public-content monitoring. Meta names the Meta Content Library and Content Library API as its replacement.

This guide converts each free tier into comparable numbers, shows where each one stops, and lists the cost per 1,000 requests or results on the first paid tier. All prices are as of October 2026 and change often.

What Meta Still Gives You for Free, and Where It Stops

Meta's Instagram Platform APIs cost nothing to call. They are built for managing professional accounts, though, not for researching Instagram in general. If you want data about accounts you don't own, the free Meta route stops quickly.

Instagram Graph API limits

The current Instagram Platform serves only Business and Creator accounts (Instagram Platform docs). These are the Instagram Graph API limits that matter most:

LimitWhat it means in practiceSource
Professional accounts onlyPersonal accounts are out of scopeInstagram Platform
30 unique hashtags per 7 daysHashtag search caps topic research at roughly 4 new hashtags a dayIG Hashtag Search
Hashtag search needs Facebook Login + "Instagram Public Content Access"Requires an app review and a linked Facebook setupSame as above
Business DiscoveryBasic metadata and metrics about other professional accounts (follower and media counts, likes and comments per post); age-gated accounts are not returnedBusiness Discovery
Rate limit"Calls within 24 hours = 4800 * Number of Impressions", counted per app and user pairRate limiting

The Graph API works well for publishing, reading your own insights, and checking a competitor's public business profile. It does not work for keyword search across Instagram, for collecting posts from personal accounts, or for tracking more than a handful of hashtags.

Meta Content Library access

Meta Content Library access is free: "There are no fees associated with access or computation" (Meta Transparency Center). It includes Instagram posts from business and creator accounts, plus some personal accounts (verified, or with 100 or more followers).

Eligibility is the limit. Access is restricted to academic institutions and not-for-profit research organizations, applications are reviewed by CASD, and media companies are generally excluded (heise). For a qualifying researcher it is the strongest free option. Brands, agencies and startups can't use it.

Free Tiers of Third-Party Instagram Data Providers, in Real Numbers

Third-party providers give free trial capacity in different units: dollars of usage, records, requests, credits, or daily units. Converting them to a common unit shows the free tiers range from about 40 queries to a few thousand records a month.

For the largest recurring free allowance, Bright Data (5,000 records a month) and Apify (about 1,850 results a month) lead. EnsembleData is the only one that resets daily. HikerAPI, ScrapeCreators and Xpoz give one-time allowances that suit evaluation more than ongoing collection.

When Free Stops Working: The Five Ceilings You Will Hit

Every free Instagram data option ends at one of five ceilings. Knowing which one applies to your project tells you whether to upgrade, switch providers, or apply for research access.

  1. Ownership ceiling. Meta's APIs cover your own professional accounts, plus Business Discovery metadata for other professional accounts. Personal accounts and broad keyword search are out of reach.
  2. Hashtag ceiling. 30 unique hashtags per 7 days on the Graph API. A campaign tracking 10 branded and 25 category hashtags is over the cap in the first week.
  3. Eligibility ceiling. Meta Content Library requires an academic or non-profit affiliation and an approved application.
  4. Volume ceiling. Apify blocks usage once the monthly $5 is spent. Bright Data stops at 5K records. Apify's free plan also returns only about 15 comments per post, which matters for comment analysis.
  5. One-time allowance ceiling. HikerAPI's 100 requests, ScrapeCreators' 100 credits and Xpoz's 500 credits don't refresh. On Xpoz Free, usage stops at zero credits; there is no overage.

Upgrade Paths: Instagram API Pricing on the First Paid Tier

Once free runs out, first paid tiers range from about $19 a month to €300 a month. Unit cost runs from $0.60 to $2.30 per 1,000 for per-request and per-result providers. Per-query billing works differently, and is covered in the next section.

ProviderFirst paid stepCost per 1,000Volume pricing
ApifyStarter $19/mo$2.30 → $1.50 per 1K results (falls on higher plans)Scale $199/mo, Business $999/mo
Bright DataPay-as-you-go$1.50 per 1K recordsScale $499/mo includes 384K records, then $1.30/1K
HikerAPIPrepaid, popular plan$1.00 per 1K requests$0.60/1K at volume
ScrapeCreators$47 for 25K credits$1.88 per 1K requests$497 for 500K credits ($0.99/1K); credits never expire
EnsembleData$100/mo (1,500 units/day)Depends on endpoint unit costUp to $1,400/mo (50K units/day)
Data365€300/mo (1 network, 500K credits)Not directly comparable€850/mo (3 networks, 1M credits)
XpozPro $20/mo (7,500 credits = 625 Instagram queries)~$32 per 1K Instagram queriesMax $200/mo (120,000 credits = 10,000 Instagram queries, ~$20 per 1K queries); overage $3 (Pro) or $2 (Max) per extra 1K credits

Caveat: Data365's pricing page does not confirm which networks each plan includes.

Per-Request vs Per-Result vs Per-Query: Which Is Cheaper

The cheapest Instagram scraper pricing depends on how your workload maps to the billing unit. Per-result billing rewards small, targeted pulls. Per-request billing rewards endpoints that return many items per call. Per-query billing rewards broad searches that return large result sets.

  • Per result (Apify, Bright Data). You pay for every post or record returned. Cost scales linearly: 100,000 posts at $1.50/1K is $150, however you query for them. Predictable, but large pulls get expensive.
  • Per request (HikerAPI, ScrapeCreators). You pay per API call, whatever it returns. HikerAPI also bills some error responses (such as 403 and 404), so retries and bad IDs cost money.
  • Per query (Xpoz). Instagram queries cost 12 credits, with "no charge for the number of rows returned." A fast-mode query returns up to 300 results. On Pro, a query that fills the 300-result cap works out to about $0.11 per 1,000 posts. A profile lookup that returns one row still costs the full 12 credits.

Rule of thumb for cost per 1000 Instagram posts: if you pull many posts per search, per-query billing is usually cheapest. If you run thousands of single-item lookups (one profile, one post), per-request providers like HikerAPI at $1/1K requests usually win.

How Xpoz Addresses This

Xpoz is a hosted MCP server and API that gives AI agents read-only access to public Twitter/X, Instagram, TikTok and Reddit data, drawing on 3B+ indexed posts across Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and Reddit. It removes the ownership and hashtag ceilings: you don't need to own the account, pass Meta app review, or bring Instagram API keys.

What Xpoz covers on Instagram:

NeedXpoz tool
Search captions and video subtitles by keywordgetInstagramPostsByKeywords
Pull an account's postsgetInstagramPostsByUser
Fetch specific posts (1–50 per call)getInstagramPostsByIds
Read commentsgetInstagramCommentsByPostId
See who commented on or liked a postgetInstagramPostInteractingUsers
Look up or search profilesgetInstagramUser, searchInstagramUsers
Find creators posting about a topic, with engagement totalsgetInstagramUsersByKeywords
Followers or followinggetInstagramUserConnections

Xpoz has trade-offs. Instagram is its most expensive platform per query (12 credits, compared with 2 for X and Reddit), so the free tier's 500 credits cover about 41 Instagram queries. That is enough to evaluate the tools, not to run ongoing collection. Xpoz returns data only. Sentiment scoring, alerts and reports come from your AI client or your own code. There are no Stories or Reels-specific endpoints.

It connects to Claude (web, Desktop, Code), Gemini CLI, Codex, Cursor, ChatGPT, n8n and other MCP-compatible clients, and also offers TypeScript and Python SDKs. Setup takes about two minutes, and commercial use is allowed.

Practical Examples

The examples below show how to stretch a free tier and when to move up.

Example 1: Make 41 free queries count

On the free tier, every Instagram query should be broad and return a lot. Use boolean syntax to combine related terms in one search instead of running several narrow ones:

{
  "tool": "getInstagramPostsByKeywords",
  "query": "(\"cold brew\" OR \"iced coffee\") AND (recipe OR homemade) NOT sponsored",
  "startDate": "2026-09-01",
  "endDate": "2026-10-15",
  "responseType": "fast",
  "limit": 300
}

One query costs 12 credits and can return up to 300 posts, including matches found in video subtitles. Use the fields parameter to request only the columns you need, which keeps responses small for your AI client.

Example 2: Find creators without hitting a hashtag cap

A marketing team that wants skincare creators would burn through the Graph API's 30-hashtag weekly cap quickly. One call to getInstagramUsersByKeywords with a query like "niacinamide" OR "skin barrier" OR "retinol routine" returns unique authors of matching posts. If you request the aggregate fields, it also returns their total likes, comments, saves and video plays on those posts.

Example 3: Watch your credit burn

Before the free credits run out, ask your assistant to call getAccountDetails for remaining credits and getCreditsUsageHistory with a 7d period. If a week of testing used 300 credits and you expect to triple that in production, you would need about 900 credits a week, or roughly 3,900 a month, which fits inside Pro's 7,500 monthly credits (625 Instagram queries). You can estimate this from data instead of guessing.

Example 4: Pick the right tool for the job

  • A university lab studying public discourse: apply for Meta Content Library access first, since it's free with no compute fees.
  • A brand reporting on its own account: the Graph API is free and authoritative.
  • A developer pulling 200,000 posts a month into a warehouse: Bright Data's Scale plan or Apify's per-result pricing.
  • A team running thousands of single-profile lookups: HikerAPI at $1 per 1,000 requests.
  • An analyst asking an AI agent cross-platform questions about Instagram, TikTok, X and Reddit: Xpoz, starting on the free tier.

Key Takeaways

  • Meta's free route is narrow. Basic Display was retired on December 4, 2024, and CrowdTangle shut down on August 14, 2024. The Graph API covers professional accounts and allows 30 hashtags per 7 days.
  • Meta Content Library is the best free option, for researchers only. It has no fees, but eligibility is limited to academic and non-profit organizations.
  • Bright Data and Apify have the largest recurring free tiers. 5,000 records and about 1,850 results a month respectively.
  • Match the billing unit to your workload. Per-result costs $1.30–$2.30 per 1K, per-request $0.60–$1.88 per 1K, and per-query (Xpoz) charges 12 credits per Instagram query whatever the row count.
  • Treat one-time free tiers as evaluations. Xpoz's 500 credits (about 41 Instagram queries), HikerAPI's 100 requests and ScrapeCreators' 100 credits are for testing before you commit.

Conclusion

The free Instagram data options in 2026 work if your project fits their limits: your own professional accounts, a few hashtags, a research affiliation, or a few thousand records a month. Most commercial research projects outgrow them quickly, so the decision that matters is which billing model fits how you query.

If your workflow runs through an AI assistant and covers more than Instagram, try Xpoz on a real question with the free tier. It needs no credit card and no Instagram API keys. Compare plans at xpoz.ai/pricing, find setup guides at help.xpoz.ai, and start free with 500 credits.
